Australia combines aspects of a modern cosmopolitan environment with one of the world’s last great frontiers. For the American student who can no longer find a frontier at home, the Australian outback offers a substitute. Australia’s great cities and modern contributions to culture and science offer contrast to the frontier. It blends its European traditions with its Asian location and increasing economic and cultural relations with neighboring Asian countries.
As a means of broadly exploring these points of contrast, this study abroad program gives an overview of the contemporary government, political, and justice systems of Australia. It also examines traditional and emerging public policy in several areas of importance to contemporary Australia (i.e. the environment, immigration, aboriginal affairs, equal opportunity, multiculturalism, social welfare, health, and international relations). Where appropriate, comparisons are drawn to the United States.
