Ani Sarkissian
Ani Sarkissian is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Michigan State University. She joined MSU in 2007 and is a core faculty member of the Muslim Studies Program and the Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.
She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2006, where she received grants from the National Science Foundation and IREX to develop her dissertation on religion and democratization.
Sarkissian’s research agenda focuses on comparing and investigating the role of religion in politics in countries around the world. She is working on several projects on the topics of political and social tolerance, civil society, religious political parties, and the role of religious organizations in democratization. She is also a co-investigator on a project investigating the political consequences of the Roman Catholic Charismatic Movement in Sub-Saharan Africa. She uses both quantitative and qualitative methods in her analyses and has conducted field research in Armenia, Georgia, and Turkey.
