2017 MPP graduates

David Briscoe entered the MPP program as a linked student in the summer of 2015, having already majored in Political Science at Michigan State University.  A Michigan native from Garden City, MI, David’s primary policy interests are healthcare policy and urban development.  Intending to complete the program in 2017, David would like to pursue a position in public service.

Chunyu Guo entered the BA-MPP linked program between Michigan State University and Sichuan University in China in the fall of 2015, and is expected to graduate in 2017.  Chunyu’s policy interest is education which she has previously been involved with.  During her undergraduate study, she was the vice president of “The Wings of Hills”, a non-profit organization which is aimed to improve education standards in poverty.  She has been working to raise awareness in poverty education and had worked closely with volunteers to help the students in poverty areas.  In recent time, she has joined an entrepreneurial team, focusing on camping education programs.  Her vision for the future is to enter NGO that focuses on social education programs.

Hui Huang is a student of Zhejiang University with a major in sociology.  Hui entered the Public Policy program in the fall of 2015.  Hui’s policy interests include social policy.  Hui is originally from Zhejiang, China.  In her spare time, Hui enjoys playing the piano, traveling and making friends with people from all around the world.  Hui enjoys doing research and looks forward to studying how to make public policy.  She wants to have a job which may make the knowledge she has learned into use.

Yusri Jamaluddin is a 2015 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Master’s in Business Analytics and a Bachelors in Information Technology and Web Science.

Yusri was recently admitted to the class of 2017 Masters of Public Policy program at Michigan State University.  His policy areas of interest include international relations and elections.

Prior to entering the MPP Program, Yusri interned at the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Office and had previously worked on the Open Government Data project during his studies at RPI.  He has also been involved in doing research and anaylsis for IRIS Institute; a Malaysian think tank since its founding in 2014.  He is a proud Malay native from Bangi, Malaysia and he showcases a traditional Malay costume in his bio.

Yusri is very passionate about data analytics and intends to professionally practice it in his future career as a data analyst.  He can be contacted via linkedin.

James Laney earned a BS in Biomathematics from Our Lady Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas in 2015.  He is a Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Scholar.  James is the son of Army officers and was born in Seoul, South Korea.  From Korea, the Laney’s moved to Arizona, and then to Cleveland, Tennessee.  There, James attended Lee University as a math major, transferred to Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN to study Civil Engineering, and finally made his way to San Antonio to finish his undergraduate period.

James is a math and science tutor and also teaches piano lessons.

He enjoys reading science-fiction novels (The Dune Saga by Frank Herbert is the all-time favorite).  Writing spoken-word poetry, creating music alone or with others, thinking alone in nature or in deep conversations with friends, and getting lost in semi-new environments to find his way out and learn the surroundings better are a few of the many enjoyable activites which make James who he is.

Upon completion of the program, James intends to ‘get lost’ in the areas of community organization and incorporating the policy strategies of other nations to help construct a more unified earth. Jordon Newton graduated from Gonzaga University with a B.S. in Economics and a minor in Political Science in the spring of 2015, and is joining the MPP Program in the fall of 2015.  Jordon’s policy interests include fiscal policty and healthcare.  Jordon is originally from Spokane, Washington, and is expected to complete his degree in the spring of 2017.  Jordon enjoys watching baseball in his spare time and will be an assistant for the MSU debate team while completing his degree.

Alexa Malesky entered the MPP Program in the fall of 2015.  She is a senior majoring in Political Science Pre-Law.  Alexa has a wide variety of policy interests, ranging from economic to education policy.  Prior to entering the MPP program, Alexa interned for Representative Dave Camp in Washington, D.C.  She currently is an intern for the lobbying firm MGS in Lansing.  Alexa hopes to have a career at a policy think-tank post graduation.

Xiao Niu graduated from Michigan State University in the spring of 2015 with a B.S. in Economics.  Xiao entered the MPP program in the fall of 2015, and is expected to graduate in 2017.  Xiao is interested in public finance, and is looking forward to working for government in the future.  Prior to the MPP program, Xiao interned as Konnech Inc.  Xiao is originally from Beijing, China.  In his spare time, he likes to play tennis, read books, watch movies, and spend time with his friends.

Zach Polselli is a BA/MPP linked student at Michigan State University.  He entered the program in the fall of 2015.  His policy interests include long term environmental, educational and communal reform.  Poverty and its link to crime are topics of interest as well.

Prior to entering the MPP program, Zach interned for a local politician who won the state representative seat of the 27th district of Michigan.  He is from the metro Detroit area.  In his spare time he enjoys reading, traveling, playing and watching hockey as well as spending time with friends and family.

Ideally he would like a legislative role federally, or to work in an administrtive role in the city of Detroit or an international city.

Elizabeth Raczkowski graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science – International Studies and an additional major in Political Science.  She entered the MPP program in the Fall 2015 and plans to complete her studies in the spring of 2017.  Her policy interests include economic development and transportation policy as well as urban planning issues.  After graduating, she hopes to find a position in local government or a non-profit organization.  Originally from Ida, Michigan, Elizabeth enjoys reading, traveling, and genealogy.

Cassie Richard is a 2014 graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a major in sociology and a certification in nonprofit management.  Cassie entered the program in the fall of 2015.  Her policy interests include labor policy with an emphasis on gender.  She is especially interested in women’s economic participation and how it varies globally.  Prior to entering the MPP program Cassie served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation in Detroit, MI.  In her spare time she enjoys reading memoirs by female leaders, Netflix, and running.

Vinny Szczerowski entered the BA-MPP program in the fall of 2015 and is expected to complete the MPP program in the spring of 2017.  He is currently a 4th year student at Michigan State University majoring in Public Policy.  Along with this, Vinny is a member of the Department’s inaugural class of the Political Science Scholars Program.  Vinny’s political interests include activism and involvement within the Republican Party.  He currently serves as the President of the MSU Student for Life, Vice President of the MSU College Republicans, and a member of the Executive Committee of the First Congressional District Republican Party.  Vinny hopes to work within the state government in some capacity, focusing on the formulation of health or economic policy.

In his spare time, Vinny enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, playing the piano, and reading.
