Adrienne LeBas

Adrienne LeBas (Ph.D., Columbia University, 2005) is currently a Post-Doctoral Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford University.  LeBas will spend the 2005-2006 academic year at Oxford working on her book manuscript, From Protest to Parties: Contentious Politics in Democratizing Africa.  This project attempts to explain variation in opposition party strength in sub-Saharan Africa by looking at differences in social movement emergence and political party structure. It draws on two years of dissertation fieldwork in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

During her graduate studies, LeBas was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and worked as a consultant and writer for Human Rights Watch.  Her research on democratization, party behavior, and state violence has been published in Politique Africaine and is forthcoming in Comparative Politics.  LeBas received an undergraduate degree in political science and economics from the University of Florida.
