Marcella Babcock is a Ph.D. student at Michigan State University. Her research interests include topics related to the question of development as a human right, governance and Islam, and transitional justice. Her regional focus is the Middle East and North Africa.
Marcella graduated from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota with a B.A. in International Studies. Her semester abroad in Rabat, Morocco grounded her undergraduate focus on human rights and humanitarianism. Here she completed an original research project on the transparency of Morocco’s National Initiative for Human Development and the program’s effectiveness in its stated goal of closing the urban and rural poverty gap.
She knew she wanted to eventually pursue a graduate degree, yet she felt a strong desire to complete two AmeriCorps terms of service where she worked on social justice issues related to educational equity. She returned to academia in the fall of 2015.
In her spare time, Marcella likes to play with her two house rabbits. She is a fan of musical theater and comedy, and she loves to cook creatively.
