Shayla Olson joined the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University in the fall of 2018. Shayla comes to MSU after graduating with honors from Indiana State University with a B.A. in Political Science. Her fields of study are American politics and research methods, with research interests in media and politics and religion and politics.
As an undergraduate, Shayla’s research spanned from studying American foreign policy in Ireland to polarization on college campuses. Her honor’s thesis focused on social media’s effects on issue salience. She presented this research at a poster session at the 2018 Midwest Political Science Association Conference. Shayla also worked for ISU’s chapter of the American Democracy Project, a national civic engagement initiative. Her work involved increasing civics education on college campuses and helping students register to vote.
Additionally, she was recognized as a President’s Scholar and served as the Winter 2017 Commencement Speaker.
