How divided are Michigan counties in their presidential preferences?

If you compare counties to the average county vote each year, then the typical counties (Ottawa, Wayne) emerge who tend to predominately support one party:

However, these relative differences are much less apparent when looking across campaigns. The animation below shows how Michigan counties show strong year-to-year similarities in their two-party vote splits by year:

Michigan counties may have their favorite parties, but they typically are more unified than divided in their presidential choices. From 1920-2004, only 22% of the variation in two-party splits is attributed to time-constant county differences. That means a majority of county differences, 78%, are shared by counties across years.
