Jonathan M. King is a Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) in Political Science at Michigan State University, specializing in American politics and research methods with a focus on the U.S. federal courts. His dissertation, supported by an NSF DDRIG, applies machine learning and natural language processing to 55,000 pre-confirmation texts of circuit court judges and creates personality trait estimates on the popular "Big Five" spectrum. These estimates are used to examine the impact of personality on circuit court behavior such as Supreme Court compliance, panel effects, and dissenting behavior. In addition to his dissertation, Jonathan researches federal judicial nominations. At Michigan State, Jonathan teaches courses on Judicial Politics, Constitutional Law, and supervises Independent Undergraduate Research.
