MSU Political Science Professor Matt Grossmann researches American politics and policy on the national and state levels, particularly the role of political parties and interest groups in the electoral and policy outcomes.
He is the author of several books including Polarized by Degrees, How the Diploma Divide and the Culture War Transformed American Politics. His latest Policymaking for Realists examines the polarization of both Democratic and Republican parties and what this means for policymakers hoping to find bipartisan solutions.
Dr. Grossmann is also Director of the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research in the College of Social Science, Senior Fellow at the Niskanen Center and host of the Science of Politics podcast. He was named an Andrew Carnegie Fellows in 2025 and served as a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago in the spring of 2026.
