Jeff Conroy-Krutz

BIOGRAPHY

Jeff Conroy-Krutz is associate professor and chair of political science at Michigan State University, where he is also a core faculty member in the African Studies Center.  He studies media and information, ethnicity, clientelism, electoral campaigns, and polarization in Africa, with a focus on experimental methods.  His current work examines various radio-based efforts to combat scapegoating and hate speech, and encourage democratic engagement, with recent and ongoing projects in Burundi, DR Congo, Kenya, Mali, Niger, and Rwanda; he has also conducted research in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, and Uganda.  His work has appeared in African Affairs, British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, Comparative Politics, Electoral Studies, Journal of Modern African Studies, Journal of Politics, Political Behavior, Political Communication, Political Research Quarterly, and World Development, and been funded by the National Science Foundation, USAID, BBC Media Action, the Embassy of the Netherlands, and the US State Department. He has a PhD in political science from Columbia University.  Since 2018, he has served as the editor of the Afrobarometer Working Papers Series.
