AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION

Kelsey is a scholar of American politics and her research areas of interest include the study of race and ethnic politics, identity politics,  political behavior, public opinion, and symbolic politics. Using a series of surveys, experiments, and qualitative interviews, Kelsey's dissertation specifically focuses on the relationship between political symbols, attitudes, and political behavior.  Kelsey has published in the Journal of Race and Ethnic Politics and has presented her work at several different conferences across the country.  She will enter the academic job market in the Fall of 2026.

BIOGRAPHY

Kelsey is currently a fourth year Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at MSU. She is from Nashville, Tennessee, but fondly considers herself an adopted Michigander. Outside of academia, Kelsey is deeply devoted to her community and local politics. Areas of service include serving as co-chair on APSA Committee on the Status of Graduate Students in the Profession and as assistant secretary of the NAACP Lansing Branch. Finally, she is an avid fan of reading fantasy and science fiction novels and watching Star Trek.
