Michigan State University’s Master of Public Policy (MPP) program prepares the next generation of policy leaders to address complex societal problems with evidence-based solutions. Designed for recent graduates and working professionals, our program equips you with the analytical tools, political and economic insight, and hands-on experience needed for dynamic careers in public policy. Flexible Learning Format

Built to accommodate busy schedules, MSU’s MPP program offers flexible course delivery tailored for both full-time students and working professionals. Fall and Spring courses meet in person during late afternoons (3:00–5:50 p.m.) and evenings (6:00–8:50 p.m.), while Summer courses are delivered fully online. Throughout the program, you will work closely with distinguished faculty, engage in collaborative discussions with peers, and receive personalized mentorship to advance your career.

 

Learn by Doing

As a Spartan MPP student, you will combine high-quality graduate instruction with hands-on, real-world application to prepare for the fast-paced professional policy arena. Through internships, fieldwork, applied policy projects, and direct interaction with policy leaders and practitioners, you will apply classroom theory to navigate complex governance challenges and ethical values in policymaking. By the time you graduate, you will possess a strong portfolio of tangible deliverables to showcase to employers across government agencies, research institutions, advocacy groups, and private consulting firms, while building an extensive network of accomplished alumni leading at the local, national, and global levels. Core Focus Areas

For MSU’s MPP program, students must complete 13 three-credit courses and an applied internship, for a total of 42-credits. Administered by the Department of Political Science and drawing on expert faculty in the fields of political science, policy sciences, and economics, the MPP curriculum equips students with the essential tools to develop, analyze, and implement sound public policy. Core instruction covers quantitative data analysis and economic evaluation; policy analysis and policy feasibility; program development and management; public finance and budgetary decision-making; policy implementation, evaluation, and advocacy; among other topics.

Program Duration

Our flexible structure allows you to complete your degree at a pace that fits your life and career commitments. Full-Time Track: Students taking 3 courses (9 credits) per semester complete the degree in 5 consecutive semesters (~2 years). Part-Time Track: Working professionals taking 1–2 courses (3–6 credits) per semester typically complete the degree in 7 to 9 semesters (~3 years).

Cost

Estimated tuition rates for the Master of Public Policy program (based on the 2026–2027 academic year) are as follows: In-State Tuition: $41,160 total ($980 per credit hour); Out-of-State / International Tuition: $76,230 total ($1,815 per credit hour). Note: Rates are subject to change, and additional university fees apply each semester. The estimated total cost for course materials (e.g., textbooks) is approximately $1,050.
