Shared BA/BS-MPP Program

Shared BA/BS-MPP Program (Accelerated 5-Year Degree) Program

You can earn both your bachelor’s degree and a Master of Public Policy (MPP) in just five years! Offered by the Department of Political Science, the Shared BA/BS-MPP program is an accelerated pathway designed for high-achieving MSU undergraduates who want to launch careers in policy analysis, program management, public administration, and advocacy.

By completing approved coursework during your senior year, you can apply up to 12 credits toward both your undergraduate and master’s degree requirements. This saves you significant time and tuition while jump-starting your career in public service.

Program Eligibility: Admission to the Shared Program is competitive and open to qualified MSU undergraduates:

  • Primary Majors: Open to current MSU students majoring in Political Science. Note: Undergraduate students in other majors may be eligible for a similar dual-enrollment option in the MPP program.
  • Academic Background: Strong academic performance, typically indicated by a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher and strong marks in political science, economics, and policy-related coursework.
  • Career Goals: A demonstrated interest in public policy issues and graduate-level study.

Application Process & Step-by-Step Requirements: Students typically apply toward the end of their junior year, with the expectation of starting graduate coursework in their senior year. (In select circumstances, applications for Spring semester entry may also be considered).

  • Step 1: Mandatory Academic Advising: Before starting your application, schedule a meeting with MPP Academic Advisor Krista Zeig (kzeig@msu.edu) to review your transcript, confirm your eligibility, and ensure the 5-year timeline aligns with your degree requirements.
  • Step 2: Complete the Online Application: Submit your application through the MSU Online Application Portal. Select the Master of Public Policy program to generate your applicant ID.
