Application Deadlines & Review Timelines

MSU’s Master of Public Policy (MPP) program evaluates applications on a structured schedule designed to give applicants timely feedback while ensuring equitable consideration for departmental funding, assistantships, and fellowships.

Detailed Timeline & What to Expect

Phase 1: Application Launch & Early Preparation (August 15): The online application portal opens annually on August 15. Applicants are encouraged to start early to gather transcripts, request letters of recommendation, and draft their personal and supplemental statements.

Phase 2: Priority Review & Funding Consideration (January 15): To be considered for departmental, IPPSR, and other graduate assistantships, as well as competitive university-wide financial awards, your complete application must be submitted by January 15.

The Admissions Committee conducts a comprehensive, holistic review of all completed priority files during late January and early February. Priority applicants receive official admission decisions between February 15 and March 1. Notification of assistantship or fellowship offers is included directly in admission letters or communicated shortly thereafter.

Phase 3: Rolling Admissions & Continuous Review (March 1 – June 1): Applications received after January 15 are reviewed on a rolling basis through the final deadline.

The Admissions Committee meets continuously, with decision notifications released approximately every three weeks. Applications submitted during this window are considered for remaining funding options on a space-available basis. Note for International Applicants: We strongly recommend submitting all materials by March 15 to allow ample time for document verification, visa processing, and international student orientation setup.

Phase 4: Final Cutoff & Program Onboarding (June 1 – Late August): The application portal closes for Fall admission on June 1. No late applications are reviewed for the upcoming academic year. Admitted students participate in new-student orientation sessions in late August, meet faculty and peers, complete academic advising, and begin Fall coursework.

How the Admissions Committee Reviews Files: Our Admissions Committee uses a holistic evaluation approach. Rather than relying on single metric cutoffs, committee members assess your entire profile, including:

  • Academic Preparation: Coursework performance, quantitative/analytical foundation, and readiness for graduate study.
  • Public Service Commitment: Demonstrated interest in public policy through your personal statement, professional background, or volunteer experience.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Insights from faculty or professional supervisors assessing your leadership capabilities, critical thinking skills, and academic promise.
